Steeped in history and situated next to beautiful Hagley Park, Dorset House Backpackers is a relaxing environment from which to enjoy all that Christchurch has to offer.
The house was built in 1871 for the wealthy timber merchant, J.B. Way, and as one of Christchurchs early homesteads it once featured 27 rooms and three Italian marble fireplaces.
Rated at 4-Star level (Backpacker) by Qualmark, Dorset House is surrounded by flower gardens, and has been recently redecorated and refurbished to a high standard of modern comfort.
Dorset House is equipped with everything the budget traveller could need. Our lounge is known as the Old Chapel, and is a huge room with plenty of comfortable couches and sunny corners for relaxing and talking.
There is free WiFi internet access in the guest areas, DVD player, Cable TV, bookcase, board games, stereo and even a free pool table to keep you entertained.
To help you stay in touch, computers with internet, printing, SKYPE and CD burning are available, as well as FREE WiFi in the communal guest areas. Our sunny and well-equipped kitchen is stocked with spices, tea and coffee and has plenty of storage space. A guest laundry is available, with both dryers and outdoor lines. We aim to reduce our environmental footprint through careful recycling, water and energy use.

Dorset House has 17 rooms, and can accommodate up to 39 guests. Choose from a double, twin, single or share room; all spacious and comfortable with large windows and plenty of afternoon sun. There are no bunk beds here; all beds are fully made with sheets, duvets and pillows. All rooms are near clean, modern bathrooms with plenty of hot water and hairdryers. A slice of Christchurchs past that we are proud to share, come and stay at Dorset House.
How to get to Dorset House Backpackers & Apartments
From the airport, catch a 24-hour shuttle service to our front door ($17-20) or a taxi ($35-45). Alternatively a public bus is available during the day. From the train station: catch a shuttle or taxi for less than $10. There is a free shuttle in the mornings returning to the train station each day.If driving: Dorset Street is one block below Bealey Avenue, at the northern end of the central city.Check In time : 2.00pm Check Out time : 10.00am
