Each of the 6 double-glazed bedrooms has a charming heritage colour scheme, while the Honeymoon suite is paneled in native timbers even the ceiling. Everywhere there is the glow of polished copper and brass, particularly in the bathrooms. Look carefully and youll find old washstands and other heritage fittings have been incorporated too; with all these features given a 5 star rating by Qualmark.
In the best tradition of great family houses, a continental or full breakfast is served at a single big table in a dining room separated by beautiful sliding leadlight doors from the distinctively decorated English club style lounge. Everywhere youll find exceptional timber details, the signature of the England Brothers who built Elm Tree House in 1920. But dont think everything is traditional or conventional. Pride of place goes to a multi-coloured Wurlizter jukebox on which you can play hits of the 60s and 70s without spending a cent. As you relax youll find other points of interest: theres a trunk of book swaps, Karen collects pretty Carlton Ware and Allan, once responsible for designing and making racing engines for Jaguar and thus for famous wins at Le Mans and Daytona, has made up a fascinating display of racing car memorabilia.
The eponymous weeping elm stands high in the garden, which features a formal outside terrace opening off the lounge and dining room. If you are there in winter a huge fireplace of pink pumice and local blue granite makes the perfect focus for relaxation.

How to get to Elm Tree House
From the Airport:
From the airport continue straight ahead down Memorial drive. Turn left at the sixth set of traffic lights into Glandovey road. Turn right into Papanui road, we are on the left.
From the North:
Stay on the road from the north, (do not take city 74) this becomes Papanui road, after the large Northlands Mall on right. Continue for 3Kms, we are behind the large white fence on your left.
From the South:
Stay on the road from the south, take Riccarton road on your left at the large Sockburn roundabout. At the end of Riccarton road (5kms), turn left at Hagley Park and follow the park clockwise. Cross a small bridge at the traffic lights and the next road on the left is Papanui road. Continue up 1.5kms, we are on the right.
From the West:
From the west follow Yaldhurst road till it veers left into Riccarton road. Then as from the south.
